Top 10 Tips On Repairing Fridge :
1. The first tip is to check the thermostat. The fridge can be switched off by its internal thermostat or, especially in older fridges, a mechanical timer switch on the wall. If nothing appears wrong and it's not switching itself off, check the temperature settings – you may have left it at too high a level.
2. In a cooler climate, never leave the fridge door
open for long periods or you could freeze your food. If it's hot and humid
where you live, be aware of the fact that as soon as the fridge warms up,
moisture will build upon the condenser coils inside. Close the door to allow
the fridge to cool and dry out.
3. Check that there's nothing blocking the vents at
the bottom of your fridge or freezer, as this may lead to overheating. Check
for obstructions behind the fridge – it could be something simple like a
dustbin lid or laundry basket which is blocking airflow.
4. Defrost fridges regularly. It's a good idea to
defrost the freezer compartment at least once every two months and the
fridge-chiller compartment at least once a month, depending on how often you
use it and where you live (if you're unsure of how often to defrost your
fridge, it's usually a good idea to do it weekly – but check your
manufacturer's instructions).
5. Always use fridge shelves that are designed to withstand
temperatures of minus 18°C, while the baskets in the freezer compartment should
be able to tolerate a temperature of minus 30°C. If you're finding crackling
noises in the back of your fridge or freezer and you're not sure why it's
possible the shelves aren't designed to withstand low temperatures.
Alternatively, you may have food in there that is too close to the back walls.
6. Make sure your fridge and freezer doors are closing
properly – the seal around the door should be checked regularly to ensure dirt
doesn't build up, blocking the door and causing higher running costs. The
rubber seal on a fridge door should be checked at least once a month, while the
fridge door gasket or seal around a freezer compartment should be checked every
three months.
7. Allow sufficient space for air to circulate around
the back of your fridge-freezer. If you're not sure of the correct amount of
space required for air to circulate, you should be able to find your
manufacturer's guidelines online.
8. Keep your fridge-freezer in a well-ventilated area
– don't store it next to a radiator or in an enclosed cupboard that doesn't
allow sufficient space. And definitely don't store your fridge-freezer in a
kitchen with an oven – the two appliances simply don't mix.
9. Avoid storing strongly scented food items (such as
onions, fish, or meat) near your fridge's cooling coils, as this will leave a
lingering smell that could affect other foods stored in the same compartment.
Also make sure you separate foods with strong odors, such as garlic or curry.
10. Finally, remember to regularly check your fridge's
seals for signs of wear and tear, as this can lead to energy leaks and a loss
of cool air. A worn seal should be replaced immediately by expecience technicians.
